Glasgow City Council (GCC) have announced that the City Legacy Consortium comprising RMJM and developers CCG, Cruden, MacTaggart & Mickel and W.H. Malcolm to design and deliver the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Athletes Village.
Providing accommodation and facilities for 6,500 competitors and officials the site will be designed to revert to residential use after the Games road show rolls out of town, creating a new east end residential neighbourhood with 1,400 low carbon homes and a care home for the elderly.
GCC will provide the land free of charge in return for a later profit sharing agreement, a move designed to alleviate the still tight lending environment for developers and allowing development to commence next year.
City Legacy beat off stiff competition from two rival consortia:
Broadway Malyan Consortium with Arup, Drivers Jonas and New City Vision.
Gladedale Consortium with Bellway Homes and Citta Property Group.

It's only 5 years until the XXth Commonwealth Games on 23rd July - 3rd August 2014.
That may seem a while but remember that the Homecoming Scotland 2009 Team Chair was announced in mid 2005 and some people only heard about that recently because of the Gathering in Edinbugh, so we'd better get cracking NOW.

Start re-opening hotels and pubs in South West Scotland now!
New Cumnock will be struggling to get ready.
Any potential buyers for hotels like The Black Bog, Castle, Comenagh, Kings Kyle, AKA the Crown in New Cumnock, East Ayrshire?

Any hotel named "The Black Bog" deserves to be highlighted by VisitScotland as a great example of Scottish honesty about our sanitation system. |

C'mon Wolfie: It's that bad, it's brilliant
If I wasn't so into Wallace history of New Cumnock I might have suggested "The Gag 'n' Ferret"
Seriously.
With a name like that, "The Black Bog" would have to be the cleanest inn in Scotland. It's a name that's hard to forget and it does have a true connection with the areas history; Loch becomes bog becomes farmland becomes town. What it becomes next is up to us.
Should I get my coat???
[I'm taking this to the Carbuncle thread ]

I agree - it's either incredibly un-selfconscious, or somebody had a great sense of irony!
I suspect it will remain true to itself ... once a bog, always a bog. |

|

It's not only Glasgow which will benefit from the games and hopefully there will be a positive effect on the way people view Scotland as a whole.
Architecture along our main transport routes into Glasgow is often depressing, so what's being done about it?
Are settlements outlying Glasgow preparing for 2014?
Will they provide ample accomodation for overspill?
Will they provide the amenities that attract visitors?
Do they look inviting to potential visitors?
Will they advertise soon enough?
Get public transport to outlying settlements sorted out!
At the moment, the first train to Glasgow from the south is late afternoon.
Offer visitors some variety, they won't all be town lovers!
Start re-opening hotels and pubs in South West Scotland now!
Is there money available to outlying councils to clean up trunk roads?
Is there money available to outlying settlements to clean up their main streets?
We need to get this sorted out now. |

| Will there be any retail/shops incorporated into the commonwealth games site and there seems to be a lot of pathway but not too many roads is that down to security or more of a community feel. |

| So if I get a hotel near Glasgow Prestwick International Airport, how long will it take me to taxi to the Games every day and how much will it cost? |
