Long mooted plans for an Ikea flat pack village in Glasgow have been abandoned.

The Swedish furniture giants had intended to build around 40 BoKlok homes as part of the £200million New Neighbourhood Development which launched last year in Drumchapel.

Spokesman Neil Shaefer has however said: “Unfortunately, because of the current economic situation, we have no plans to build any further BoKlok developments at this stage.”

This is a massive blow when considering that the project would have employed 400 people, with 100 trades people being recruited locally, and giving training to some 130 apprentices. And the timber kit frames were to be supplied by Springburn based TSBi.

This news has come as the first occupants move into a BoKlok village on Tyneside.

The idea behind BoKlok is to provide well-designed, energy-efficient homes for first-time buyers. The homes have a flexible, open-plan layout, high ceilings and large windows.
