Historic Scotland has applied their laser scanning technology, developed in conjunction with the Glasgow School of Arts Digital Design School, to Rosslyn Chapel.

The technique creates a millimetre perfect 3D recreation of the subject, effectively freezing it at a moment in time, to both create an accurate record of the Chapels current condition and inform an ongoing restoration process.

Ordinarily such data would take a surveyor a year to compile but with advanced laser scanners the task was completed in three days.

The team are in process of documenting 10 of Scotland’s top heritage sites, including Edinburgh’s Old and New Towns, Neolithic Orkney, St Kilda and the Antonine Wall.
